Emailing Community Members Using the New Roster
Did you know you can quickly and easily email any Creekside community member directly from the new Roster provided by Nadine Christenson? I discovered a trick not possible with the previous version.
First, from my Outlook email app on the Windows PC, I drag and drop it to my desktop where it's always in convenient reach. On a Mac, you may have to copy and paste it to the desktop. From the iPad Mail app, I download it to Files with the blue folder icon. The download icon is right next to the PDF attachment in the email. I don't use the iPhone for things like this. The screen and keyboard are much too small for my old, arthritic fingers.
On the Windows PC, I use the Firefox browser as the default app for opening PDF files. More about this below. On the iPad, PDFs just open in the Files app, with the blue folder icon
Open the Roster and find the address you wish to email. With the mouse pointer, or your finger on a touch screen, just touch the address. Your email client will open automatically with the address already filled in. Neat, eh? It takes me more time to describe it than to do it. To summarize:
Open Roster > find address > click on it > type email. It's that easy.
Regarding PDF files in general, I no longer use a specific reader such as Adobe Acrobat or Foxit. They require a lot of device overhead. Besides learning curves, they are often intrusive to a smooth work flow, and seem to require frequent updating. They have also been subject to hacking and well-known security issues. I've never needed a PDF editor.
Instead, I have been using the Firefox internet browser as my default PDF app for a few years now. I like the Firefox privacy features, and all the tools I need are at the top of the browser. Documents open instantly, and no schlepping around menus is needed. And no additional overhead, memory and disk space, are required. It's just what every minimalist appreciates.
